Karim Lala, born Abdul Karim Sher Khan, was a prominent figure in the Mumbai underworld between the 1960s and 1980s. He was primarily involved in operating a liquor distribution network and gambling dens. He led the Pathan gang which was notorious for its involvement in extortion, land grabbing, and contract killings.
Lala wielded considerable influence in the city's political and business circles, often acting as a mediator in disputes. Despite his criminal activities, he maintained a Robin Hood-like image among some, due to his involvement in settling local disputes and offering protection to vulnerable communities. His gang was a rival to the gangs led by other figures like Haji Mastan and Varadarajan Mudaliar, which created intense conflicts. He died in 2002 at the age of 90.
